Healthy & smart: Summer fitness tips

So Cal is all about staying fit and healthy. In the summer months, it’s important to take some extra care to make sure you are treating your body right when you’re exercising outside. Even though we’re by the ocean, San Diego can definitely have its very hot days. NPR has some solid tips for exercising during this time of year. Don’t eat before you work out. Trust us, it will slow you down and make your body very cranky. But, do hydrate before, during, and after you work out. Water is the best way to go. Try to avoid energy drinks or anything with lots of sugar and artificial ingredients. Choose and wear fitness clothing that helps your body breathe. Looking great is one thing but if your body is working harder to breathe, that is not so great. Swimming is a wonderful way to get exercise AND stay cool. Luckily, Dylan Point Loma is near the beach so that’s a no-brainer. Try a time of the day like early in the morning or later in the day to avoid peak heat times. Sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are always a good idea when it’s bright outside. You might consider doing some indoor workouts such as yoga too. Enjoy your work out and be sure to check with your trusted medical professional about your summer workout routine.
